FDG PET for Myocardial Viability
NCD298
Effective: January 28, 2005
Updated: December 31, 2025
Policy Summary
Medicare covers FDG PET to determine myocardial viability following an inconclusive SPECT (coverage from 2001-07-01 to 2002-09-30) and, beginning 2002-10-01, also as a primary diagnostic study prior to revascularization. Device requirements changed over time: only full-ring PET scanners were covered from 2001-07-01 to 2001-12-31, while full- and partial-ring scanners have been acceptable from 2002-01-01 onward. If FDG PET is inconclusive, a subsequent SPECT is not covered; referring physicians must document that coverage conditions are met in the beneficiary's medical record.
