Policy Summary
Medicare National Coverage Determination NCD315 states there are no nationally covered indications for infrared therapy devices; CMS has determined these devices and related accessories are not reasonable and necessary. Specifically, infrared and near-infrared light and/or heat (including monochromatic infrared energy) is non-covered for treatment of diabetic and non-diabetic peripheral sensory neuropathy, wounds and ulcers of the skin or subcutaneous tissues, and pain arising from these conditions. No documentation or frequency limits are specified in the NCD.
