Policy Summary
Medicare covers Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR) only for individual programs that are physician-supervised and approved through the national coverage determination process. Approved programs must present peer-reviewed published research showing at least one program-level outcome (improved CHD progression, reduced CABG, or reduced PCI) and a statistically significant reduction in five or more of six specified measures (LDL, triglycerides, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and need for cholesterol/BP/diabetes medications) from pre- to post-rehabilitation.
