Policy Summary
CMS covers annual depression screening (once every 12 months) for Medicare beneficiaries (Part A and Part B) in primary care settings when staff-assisted depression care supports are in place; the covered screening encounter is limited to up to 15 minutes. Coverage is limited to screening services only (tools may be clinician-selected); screenings beyond one per 12 months, and services such as self-help materials, telephone or web counseling, and depression treatment are not covered under this NCD.
