Screening for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in Adults

Medicare covers HCV screening with FDA-approved/CLIA-compliant laboratory tests when ordered by a primary care physician/practitioner in a primary care setting for adults at high risk (current or past injection drug use or blood transfusion before 1992) and for a one-time screening for adults born 1945–1965. Annual repeat screening is covered only for individuals with continued illicit injection drug use since a prior negative test; services outside the specified primary care context, using non‑approved tests, or not otherwise specified in this NCD are not covered. Coverage is effective for services performed on or after June 2, 2014.
