Policy Summary
CMS covers HPV testing as an additional preventive screening once every five years for asymptomatic female Medicare beneficiaries aged 30-65 when performed in conjunction with a Pap smear, effective July 9, 2015. Covered tests must be FDA-approved/cleared and performed in CLIA-certified labs; preventive HPV testing outside these indications or using non-FDA/CLIA-compliant tests is not covered. Other preventive services are non-covered unless specifically authorized by this or another NCD, statute, or regulation.
