Thermogenic Therapy
NCD7
Effective: January 1, 1966
Updated: December 31, 2025
Policy Summary
Thermogenic therapy (artificially induced fever) is not considered reasonable and necessary and is not covered for the treatment of any illness or injury, regardless of induction method. Historical uses (e.g., resistant infections, rheumatoid arthritis, Sydenham's chorea) are specifically not accepted; however, payment for otherwise-covered inpatient hospital services is not excluded even if thermogenic therapy is furnished during the stay, although reimbursement for the therapy itself may be denied.
