Policy Summary
Medicare covers liver transplantation for children (<18 years) with extrahepatic biliary atresia or other end-stage liver disease, except when the child has a malignancy extending beyond the liver or persistent viremia. For Medicare beneficiaries the transplant must be performed in a pediatric hospital with a CMS‑approved application documenting joint operation with a CMS‑approved facility, shared surgeons and quality assurance program, and available specialized facilities, services, and personnel.
