Policy Summary
Medicare covers intraoperative EEG monitoring as a method to assess gross cerebral blood flow during general anesthesia, routinely for carotid endarterectomy and for aneurysm or other cerebral vascular procedures where cerebral perfusion may be reduced or interrupted. Proper interpretation must be provided by an electroencephalographer, a neurologist trained in EEG, or an advanced EEG technician.
