Melodic Intonation Therapy

Melodic intonation therapy is covered only for patients with nonfluent aphasia who have not responded to conventional speech therapy and only when the patient meets Medicare speech pathology coverage criteria. Coverage requires documentation of the nonfluent aphasia diagnosis, documented prior conventional therapy with lack of response, and compliance with speech pathology service coverage conditions; the policy does not specify session frequency limits and notes limited supporting evidence.
