Policy Summary
The closed-loop blood glucose control device is covered for short-term (generally 24–48 hours) inpatient management of insulin-dependent (Type I) diabetic patients in crisis (e.g., trauma, surgery, labor/delivery) to stabilize wide glucose fluctuations and temporarily correct hyper- or hypoglycemia. Coverage requires use in the hospital inpatient setting under the direction and continuous observation of specially trained medical personnel, with device printouts and clinical documentation retained to support the episode of care.
