Balloon Dilation of the Eustachian Tube

Balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube (BDET) is covered as a stand‑alone procedure for adults ≥22 years with chronic obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction—persistent aural fullness and pressure (± otalgia or hearing loss) for ≥12 months—with objective abnormal tympanogram (Type B or C) and abnormal tympanic membrane, after comprehensive diagnostic assessment and failure of appropriate medical management (including a 4–6 week nasal steroid trial when indicated). Coverage is excluded for patients <22 years, episodic/barochallenge or patulous ETD, prior BDET, failure to meet the required diagnostic/medical‑therapy criteria, when performed with other procedures, or when contraindications listed in the policy apply.
